Introduction to the Gospels and Matthew

The first four books of the New Testament are called "gospels," which means "good news." They are fundamental to the revelation of God's eternal plan to redeem and save lost humanity. They are often called biographies for they each tell the story of Jesus, his birth, ministry, death, and resurrection. The good news of the Gospels is that Jesus has come, that he is both Savior and King, and people can know this is true because God has raised him from the dead. This section specifically focuses on the longest of the four Gospels, the Gospel of Matthew.

1. The student will be able to explain the centrality of Jesus Christ and the Gospels for the whole body of biblical literature.

2. The student will be able to make sweeping comparisons and contrasts between all four biblical Gospels.

3. The student will be able to meaningfully discuss the ministry and message of Jesus Christ as unfolded in the Gospel of Matthew not only concerning His work of redemption from sin, but also His discipleship training for building a body of believers to continue His work in all the world.
